Conceptualization in Pakistani Bilinguals: A Cognitive Approach

摘  要:The paper is devoted to the representation of conceptual changes among Pakistani Urdu and English bilinguals. The aim is to analyze how Urdu as LI influences cognition of basic concepts in English as L2. The research is based on qualitative analysis of casual discourse as well as quantitative analysis of a questionnaire containing only few verbal items. The sample was collected by stratifying the participants into age groups of 18-25, 26-35, 36-45, 46-55, and 56-65 year old females and males of Lahore and Faisalabad. The examples of the casual discourse were taken both from Urdu and English. Combined levels of triangulation on the individual and interactive levels ensure validity and reliability of the research. The results revealed that not only Urdu as L1 has contributed to the change in conceptualization in English as L2, but English has modified cognition and perception of certain concepts in Urdu as well.
