严译《天演论》“信”“达”真谛考——严复变译思想考之一  

On the Essence of “Faithfulness” and “Expressiveness” in the Chinese Version of Evolution and Ethics: One of the Studies on Yan Fu's Thought of Translation Variation

摘　　要：信、达、雅是严译的三字经,本文基于自制的《天演论》变译语料库,将《天演论·译例言》与严复的变译实践结合起来,以严解严,得出结论:信,一指部分信守原作,二指取信读者;达,一指达传播原作之要旨,二指服务读者之宗旨。Yan Fu, a very famous translator in the late Qing Dynasty, proposed the threeword translation principle： Faithfulness, Expressiveness and Elegance. Based on a bilingual corpus of translation variation of Evolution and Ethics, the paper discusses the ＂Faithfulness＂ and ＂Expressiveness＂ through the analysis of The Preface to the Chinese version of Evolution and Ethics and Yan Fu＇s translation practice, and concludes that ＂Faithfulness＂ refers to（1） partial faithfulness to the original and（2） adaptation to the target readers, while ＂Expressiveness＂ refers to（1） conveying the main idea of the original, and（2） serving the target readers.
