Thomas Carlyle's Sartor Resartus is known as "the most original" and "remarkable" novel for its unique structure, ambiguous persuasion and "romantic irony". This challenging writing style leaves broad room for the reader to interpret the text, but it also poses a number of puzzling questions. Based on close reading of the text and considering the historical and cultural context of Europe, especially Britain at the end of the 18th and the beginning of the 19th centuries, the present paper is intended to focus on the two topics of "clothes" and "tailor", trying to probe into such questions as follow: what are the possible writing purposes of Sartor Resartus? What does "clothes" refer to? Why do they need to be retailored? What kind of clothes are fitting? Who is the tailor? Who is that new tailor or the tailor retailored?
