This paper, based on the theories of new historicism, constructs a comparative study be-tween The Scarlet Letter and The Great Gatsby. Both of them narrate discourses of histories of the com-mon, especially that of the marginalized women. Hester from The Scarlet Letter and Daisy from The Great Gatsby are both influenced by mainstream culture, power struggle and ideology of the society, but creating different personal histories. Hester experiences the restraint of religion and patriarchy, butstill sticks to her pursuit of love and redemption, while Daisy indulges herself in hedonism and de-pends on men, and eventually loses her true love and independence. Under the historical background, independent personality and persistent belief are of great significance for the creation of women's per-sonal histories.
