To investigate the S1 genetic variation of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in Guangdong Province,56 piglet diar-rhea samples were collected from swine farms in different areas.S1 gene sequences of 12 PEDV strains were amplified by PCR andcompared with different strains to analyze the genetic characteristics and evolution regularity. Result showed that the 12 S1 genesshared 91.1%-99.6% nucleotide homology and 88.5%-99.1% amino acid homology. The 12 S1 genes shared 91.0%-99.9% nu-cleotide homologyand 88.5% -99.1% amino acid homology with Chinese reference strains. The 12 S1 genes shared 89.0% -99.7% nucleotide homology and 86.5% -99.4% amino acid homology with foreign reference strains. The 12 S1 genes shared91.0%-100.0% nucleotide homology and 88.3%-99.9% amino acid homology with classic strain CV777. Only GD-HY shared100.0% homology with classic strain CV777,while the rest of the 12 S1 genes shared lower homology with CV777.The results impli-cate that variations of Guangdong PEDV strains have occurred in recent years, and they are distant with CV777.
