By decoding the spatial signs and spatial relations in Indian American writer Sanjay Nigam' s Transplanted Man, this paper analyzes the multiple spatial connotations of Little India--the Indian ethnic enclave in New York. On the one hand, the main stream, guided by racial and class ideologies like race, class, white supremacy and elitism etc. , rejects Little India and establishes it as an "other" space in the political sense. On the other hand, for the purpose of extending and guaranteeing their Indian cultural identity, the Indians in Little India reject the main stream culture and establish it as a "home" in the cultural sense. Besides, economic factor and the Indians' effort of avoiding racial discrimination also play their roles as well. However, no matter how hard the Indians in Little India try to safeguard their Indianness, it is inevitable for them to be influenced by the main stream culture and hence their cuhural identities present the third space characteristics: fluidity, ambiguity and hybridity, which in turn match the diaspora' s conflict between their geographical alienation and psychological clinging to their motherland.
