This earthquake sequence, taking place in the upper crust beneath Kyushu Island （Fig. 1）, began with a strong foreshock （M 6.5） at local time 21：26 on 14 April 2016 and another big foreshock （M 6.4） at 00：03 on 15 April in the central part of Kuma- moto Prefecture.
