摘　　要：唐·德里罗的"9·11"小说《坠落的人》反映了"山巅之城"神话在美国社会的深远影响,以及该神话破灭之后对美国民众的巨大冲击。以尼娜为代表的普通民众,深信美国是一座"山巅之城",其光芒普照世界。他们沉浸于自身的伟大和正义之中,却看不到美国给他人带来的伤害。然而,马丁却试图指出美国在"9·11"事件中的责任和"山巅之城"神话的虚幻性。行为艺术家杰尼阿克则通过表演高空坠落,迫使美国民众正视"9·11"事件的恐怖,走出政治上的"天真",认识到他们笃信的"山巅之城"已经坍塌。Falling Man,Don De Lillo＇s novel about the effects of 9 /11,demonstrates the far-reaching influence of the myth of ＂the city upon the hill＂in the American society and the great impact on American people after the myth is proved to be illusory. The ordinary Americans such as Nina firmly believes that America is a ＂city upon the hill ＂,which illuminates the whole world. They are indulged in their own ＂greatness＂and ＂justice＂,unable to see the harms that America inflicts upon others. However,Martin tries to point out America＇s responsibility in ＂9 /11＂and the illusion that the myth of ＂the city upon the hill＂creates. At the same time,Janiak,a performance artist,by performing falls from tall buildings,forces American people to face the horror of 9 /11,to walk out of their political innocence,and to realize the fact that the city upon the hill has fallen.
