In recent years, great attention has been paid to the studies of marine culture, with sea image studies as an indispensable part.Yet the studies of sea image in fictions have been found rather insufficient with most of the studies home and abroad focusing on poetry. For one thing, scholars have shown more interest in studying the sea images of the fictions of Ming and Qing Dynasty, and those of some classic Anglo-American sea fictions which display more aesthetic features;for another, the scholars in both Britain and America have started to see that sea should not be forgotten in sea fiction studies although the studies in this area have not been prosperous in number.Neither in China nor in Britain and America has there been an attempt to initiate a systematic study of the sea images in fictions. And there has been a scarcity of a comparative study between sea images in Ancient Chinese and Anglo-American fictions.
