David Lodge's campus novel Changing Places: A Tale of Two Campuses is lauded for its humorous and satirical style and post-modern narrative techniques, but its female characters are considered as stereotypical, lacking awareness of independence and will of resistance.Based on the dialectical relations between gender and space, this essay tries to prove that the female characters in the novel actually possess the awareness of resistance and self-discovery,reflected in the form of space.Space is used not only as a tool for suppressing women in the patriarchal society but also as a tool for resisting patriarchal oppression and as the medium for women to seek for freedom and equality.Utopian as this kind of resistance may be,it offers possibilities of a new form of gender relations.
