Flavonoids are polyphenolic compounds that are ubiquitous in a variety of plants, with wide physiological activities and low toxic and side effects. According to large numbers of the findings, flavonoids had many pharmacological activities such as antioxidation, scavenging free radicals, anti-inflammatory, regulating blood lipid, reducing cardiovascular damage, inhibiting platelet aggregation and so on, which could effectively reduce the risk for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases (CCVD) morbidity and mortality. Their mechanisms in preventing and treating CCVD mainly included upregulation of antioxidant enzymes such as superoxideenzyme, catalase and glutathione peroxidase, inhibition of lipid peroxidation, reduction of cell adhesion molecules, downregulation of inflammation cytokines and activation of Nrf2/heme oxygenase- 1, PI3K-Akt and nuclear factor-kappa B signal transduction pathway. This review focuses on the advance in domestic and foreign knowledge of flavonoids exerts their beneficial effects in CCVD, in order to provide reliable literature information for the further development and clinical application of flavonoids.
