To develop a new kind of microeeological agents, the ruminal anaerobe Actinomyces ruminicola which was isolated and named NY2 was used to mix with Propionibacterium acnes to make microeeological agents for in vitro fermentation. The characteristics of in vitro fermentation of microecological agents and the ability of producing volatile fatty acids were studied to determine the best mixed ratio of the two kinds of bacte- ria in the microecological agents. The results showed that the highest concentration values of acetic acid, propionic acid, butyric acid and total volatile fatty acid in the culture flasks reached 91.07, 41.12, 27.58 and 169.19 mmol/L when the mixed ratio of Actinomyces ruminicola and Propionibacterium acnes in the microacolagical agents was 1 : 1, respectively. The microecological agents with the mixed ratio could maintain rumen pH to fluctuate around 6.0, which was conducive to rumen microbial fermentation, and could promote the generation of acetic acid, propionic acid and other volatile fatty acids.
