Identifying the deceased is important in investigations of violence crimes and missing persons. Forensic practitioners usually confirm the identification of the deceased through certain techniques to ensure the accuracy of their conclusions. Nowadays, DNA analysis and fingerprint identification are the most commonly used methods in the practice of human identification. However, when these general identification methods become invalid due to extreme mutilation or skeletonization, unconventional methods such as forensic anthropology can be used, which analyze the skeleton of the deceased to verify the physiological features(i.e. gender/age/race). Such physiological features are then compared with the missing persons list to identify the deceased. This paper mainly introduced the application of forensic anthropology in forensic cases in the United States.
