韦尔奇《印第安律师》中的二元对立──从空间政治角度解读

摘　　要：詹姆士·韦尔奇的小说《印第安律师》中主人公西尔维斯特在一个种族歧视严重、阶级差距明显、男尊女卑观念深入人心的社会中不断追寻自己印第安身份。种族、阶级、性别三组空间二元对立在小说中最为显著。掌握政治权力的白人统治着社会空间,男性控制着女性空间位置和活动,而拥有社会大多数财产的上层阶级也在空间意义上控制着下层人民。而造成这种二元对立的以及社会诸多症结的原因正是资本主义社会制度。The Indian Lawyer is a novel published in 1990 by James Welch, one of the reputable Indian-Americanwriters. The novel represents the protagonist Sylvester Yellow Calf＇s seeking of his Indian identity in a society ofhierarchy, in which, three binary oppositions are notable： the spatial binary opposition of race; the spatial binaryopposition of class and the spatia! binary opposition of gender. The white who control the political power dominatethe social space, the male manipulate the place and the aetivities of the female, furthermore, the upper class also getcontrol of the lower class in the manner of space. It is political system that results in the binary oppositions and socialCrLIX.
