从田纳西·威廉斯的戏剧看美国南方淑女的衰落

摘　　要：田纳西·威廉斯是美国著名剧作家,以塑造南方淑女形象而享誉文坛。他刻画的南方女性,饱尝辛酸、命运多舛。她们向往幸福却不够独立自强,最终随着种植园经济的瓦解而逐渐消亡。由威廉斯的两部作品《玻璃动物园》和《欲望号街车》中的阿曼达、劳拉和布兰奇等人物形象可以看出,作者既看到了南方文化的弊端,又对它带有眷恋的矛盾性特点,作品阐述了在落后的社会制度和本身的性格缺陷的双重作用下,南方淑女衰落的必然性,并进而揭示出女性只有自我拼搏,才能获得解放与幸福。Tennessee Williams is a famous American playwright, renowned for his portrayal of the southern ladies who enduredbitterness and were ill-fated under his pen. They yearned for happiness but far from being independent and self-reliant, andgradually disappeared with the collapse of the plantation economy. Through the analysis of the women characters like Amanda, Laraand Blanche in Williams＂ The Glass Menagerie and A Streetcar Named Desire, this paper reveals the contradictory characteristics ofWilliams who not only saw the drawbacks of the southern culture, but attached to it. It also discusses the inevitability of the southernladies under the dual function of the backward social system and the ladies＂ own character flaws, and further reveals that only byself- struggle, can those women gain liberty and happiness.
