Antebellum slave quarters mainly consisted of rowed log cabins, which were constructed on low cost and with what was available, and as for their spatial arrangement the quarters were to meet the planters' demand of safety and labor. Though with little amenity, the quarters were built with natural materials, their sanitary conditions improved as time went on, and they after all provided the hard working people under the peculiar institution with a breathing space.
