In order to obtain the fretting friction and wear mechanims of wire rope among layers in the winding hoist, an impact friction test bench for hoisting rope is designed. A series of sliding friction experiments were carried out. The6×19 hot-dipped galvanized rope was selected to explore the sliding friction and wear behaviour of wire rope and the temperature change rules of rope’s contact area under different contact loads, relative sliding velocities and impact velocities. The results show that the coefficient of friction(COF) of wire rope experienced the stages of rapid growth, slowly increase and stationary fluctuation over time. The COF decreased slightly with the increase of load. Moreover, the COF decreased obviously with the increase of sliding velocity. In addition, the temperature-rise was confined on the contact area and it increased as the sliding velocity increased. Furthermore, the maximum coefficient of impact friction was significantly lower than the coefficient of stable contact friction. With the increase of impact velocity and sliding velocity, the maximum coefficient of impact friction experienced a slight increase. By increasing the impact load, the number of impact friction increased.
