摘　　要：《曲径通北》是一部有关澳大利亚二战记忆的小说,书中所述澳军战俘被日军奴役修建泰缅铁路的经历堪称澳大利亚历史中最残忍的章节之一。本文认为,理查德·弗拉纳根抓住澳大利亚民族记忆的核心,以战争与爱情为主题,深刻透析生命个体在生死存亡状态下的人性抉择,拷问游离于灵与肉、善与恶和爱与恨之间的复杂人性,表达出作家谴责暴力与战争、向往爱情与和平的诉求及人文情怀。Australian prisoners of war captured by the Japanese in the WWII are central figures in Australian national memory. Richard Flanagan＇s The Narrow Road to the Deep North depicts the experience of Australian prisoners who were forced to construct the Thai-Burma railway, which has been recognized as one of the most brutal chapters in Australian history. This paper argues that Flanagan attempts to build his narrative around the dual themes of war and love, and thoroughly depicts the complex humanity that hovers between soul and body, good and evil, and love and hate. Flanagan＇s resentment against violence and war, as well as his sincere desire for love and peace is well-expressed in the novel.
