摘　　要：尤金·奥尼尔是美国现代悲剧的奠基人,他擅长用各种艺术手法表现人类的精神世界,深刻刻画人物的内心冲突,剖析人类普遍共有的欲望和梦想。他继承并突破了传统悲剧理论,其许多作品并非人们所想的那般黑暗和阴郁,他的悲剧中总是透露着希望和执着、流露出含着泪光的微笑,更渗透着乐观、梦想与浪漫的情怀。Eugene O＇Neill is regarded as the founder of American modem tragedy. He was artistically skillful at portraying human spiritual world, exposing their inner conflicts, and analyzing deeply the universal human desires and dreams. Eugene O＇Neill inherited and broke through traditional notions on tragedy. O＇Neill＇s plays are not characterized by absolute darkness and gloom. His tragic characters＇ smiles are crystallized by tears since hopes and dedication are hidden behind the despair. Romantic, optimistic and dreamy theme infiltrates in his tragedies.
