Objective: To evaluate the heat and cold characteristics of six traditional Chinese medicine( TCM) herbs. Methods:MTT assay was utilized to observe the effect of scutellariae radix,Chinese goldthread, phellodendron amurense rupr, dry ginger, mankshood, pericarpium zanthoxyli on the proliferation of LO2 cells and A549 cells in vitro. Morphological changes were observed by using the inverted microscope. Analyze the cytotoxicity of LO2 cells and A549 cells tested by Trypan-blue staining. Results:Scutellariae radix,Chinese goldthread, phellodendron amurense rupr could inhibit the proliferation of LO2 cells and A549 cells in the selected concentration range. The morphological observation showed three TCM herbs could decrease the cell density and make cells turn round. Dry ginger, mankshood, pericarpium zanthoxyli could promote the proliferation of LO2 cells and A549 cells in the low concentration range. The morphological observation showed it could increase the cell density and structure density. Trypan-blue staining showed six herbs had no cytotoxicity. Conclusion: Scutellariae radix,Chinese goldthread, phellodendron amurense rupr are cold drugs, dry ginger, mankshood, pericarpium zanthoxyli are hot drugs, and six kinds of TCM herbs had no cytotoxicity.
