In this paper, Landsat remote sensing images of 1990, 2002 and 2013 were chosen as data sources, from which 4 ecological factors were extracted, including humidity, green, dryness and heat. Through principal component analysis, the ecological environment changes of the Nanjing City from 1990 to 2013 were evaluated with a remote sensing ecological index(RSEI).The results revealed that the overall ecological quality of Nanjing had a significant decline. The mean values of RSEI fell to 0.622 in 2002 and 0.554 in 2013 while it was 0.697 in 1990. The proportion of high-grade RSEI area also fell from 68.58% in 1990 to 56.32% in 2002 and then to 44.79% in 2013. The RSEI spatial distribution results show that the ecological condition has been improved in the old city area surrounded by the Nanjing circumvallation, while the ecological quality has become worse in the newlydeveloped urban areas including Hexi, Jiangning, Xianlin and Jiangbei. In the four sub-indicators, the NDBSI index which represents dryness makes the largest contribution of RSEI. It means that the increase of impervious surfaces led to the deterioration of ecological environment quality largely.
