This research focused on the anaerobic/oxic/anoxic sequencing batch process( AOA-SBR system) using artificial wastewater and investigated its performance in the removal of nitrogen and phosphorus. Moreover, the operation parameters, including displacement ratio and HRT of aerobic and ammonia nitrogen load of the AOA-SBR system, were investigated. Under a stable optimum operation, the metabolic properties of phosphorus accumulating organisms( PAOs) in this system were studied by analyzing the formation and transformation of the intracellular polymer in a typical cycle. The results suggested that when the drainage ratio is 50%,the aerobic residence time is 110 min,and the influent ammonia load is 0. 20 kg N·( kg MLSS·d)^-1; then, the system can achieve optimum operation. In addition,it could be speculated that dominant PAOs in the anaerobic phase relied more on glycolysis than on poly-P hydrolysis for energy; the reducing equivalents for synthesizing PHA was mainly from glycolysis and only 25% originated from the TCA cycle. At the same time, the carbon source driving the anoxic denitrification was provided by PHA and glycogen.
