Objective To explore the effects of chewing gum on improvement of medication compliance and side effects for patients undergoing colonoscopy,so as to provide reference for effective intervention programs. Methods A total of 240 patients undergoing colonoscopy were randomized into a control group and an intervention group, with 120 patients in each group. The control group received bowel preparation and guidance according to the routine for colonoscopy, while the intervention group was additionally instructed to chew gum in a planned way in the intermittent period of taking the medicine. The incidence of side effects, medication compliance and the quality of bowel preparation were compared between the two groups. Results The incidence of side effects, medication compliance and the quality of bowel preparation in the intervention group were significantly better than those in the control group (P〈0.05 ,P〈0.01). Conclusion Chewing gum in a planned way during the intermittent period of taking the medicine for patients undergoing colonoscopy, can alleviate their nausea, vomit and other side effects, improve their medication compliance and the quality of bowel preparation, so as to ensure the success of colonoscopy.
