本土宗教、宗族网络与公共财政

摘　　要：本文以农业部的固定观察点调查和中国经济研究中心的补充调查数据为基础,以宗教为切入点,考察了本土宗教信仰对村庄公共收费行为的影响及其作用机制。结果发现,相比没有宗教信仰的村庄,信仰佛教、道教等本土宗教的公共收费会更高。使用历史上的宗教活动场所数量和村周边大城市的开埠历史作为工具变量,这一正向影响仍然显著。进一步作用机制检验发现,由于信教比例偏低,宗教信仰并不能通过对人们的直接教化而增加彼此的信任与合作。宗教信仰产生集体行动的原因还是在于,宗教因素作为当地宗族仪式活动中的重要组织力量,通过凝聚宗族和促进宗族成员的忠诚与团结,而间接增加公共收费。这些结果意味着,本土宗教与宗族网络在村庄治理中扮演着互补的角色。Using a unique panel data that captured by the National Fixed-point Survey （NFS） and the retrospective survey on Chinese village elections from China Center for Economic Research （CCER）, we investigate the effect of a belief in traditional native rdigions on local public finance and its mechanism. Our key finding is that on average, the village associ ated with a belief in Buddhism or Daoism increases the local finance, compared to the villages without it. Using the number of religious sites developed earlier in history and the opening years of treaty ports near the villages as the instrument variables, we find that a belief in Bud- dhism or Daoism still has a positive effect on the local public finance. Further econometric a- nalysis has shown that rural villages associated with a belief in traditional native religions are more likely to hold lineage activities, and thus promote public finance, while the trust embod- ied in the traditional native religions facilitates rural finance to a much lesser extent. This finding further implies the traditional native religions in rural China play a complementary role in rural lineage groups and thus promote collective actions.
