In the Franck-Hertz experiment, the plate current oscillating curve suddenly rises at a certain voltage, and the oscillation disappears. At this point, the gas inside the tube is broken down and a large amount of ions and electrons are produced. The question arises. When did atomic ionization start? Is there only in the breakdown process, or as early as before the breakdown there7 In this paper, the current of the gate G1 is measured by the current amplitier as a function of the voltage across the gate G2 in a tube with mercury, a gradual decrease in the current and a sudden reversal of the current were observed, this is a direct evidence of atomic ionization obtained for the first time. it shows that atomic ionization is a process of gradual development, before the gas breakdown there is ionization process, the number of atomic ionization increases with the acceleration voltage increases, the breakdown is the sudden amplification of ionization when the acceleration voltage increases to a certain extent. The extended significance of this finding is that since the existence of ionization, there are a variety of high excitation of the atom, Franck Hertz experimental curve is the result of a variety of excitation, and can not be considered only as a single level of excitation.
