Objective To investigate the epidemiological characteristics of human calicivirus infection in children less than 5 years old in Xinjiang, China. Methods A total of 782 stool specimens were collected from children younger than 5 years old with diarrhea between 2008 and 2011. Human caliciviruses were detected by RT-PCR. Results Human caliciviruses were detected in 12.7% (99/782) of the patients. The positive rates were 12.4% (58/468) in male and 13.1% (41/314) in female, respectively. The annual positive rates were 11.3% (13/115) in 2008, 16.0% (28/175) in 2009, 11.9% (45/379) in 2010, and 11.5% (13/113) in 2011, respectively. In urban area the positive rate was 12.1% while in rural area the rate was 16.0%. The results showed no statistically significant differences between years, regions and genders. In different age goups of less than 6 months, 6-12 months, 1-2 years and 〉2 years old, the positive rates were 10.2% (32/313), 15.6% (49/313), 13.8% (17/123), and 3.0% (1/33) with statistically significant difference (x2=8.149, P〈0.05). Conclusions Human Calicivirus was an important pathogen causing diarrhea in children under 5 years old in Xinjiang, with a positive rate of 12.7% during 2008-2011. Children under 2 years of age had the highest risk of infection.
