摘　　要：田纳西·威廉斯是出生在美国南北战争后半个世纪的旧南方剧作家,他又是美国话剧史上最有名的同性恋者,其特殊的成长背景与复杂的人生经历使他的戏剧主题蕴含矛盾性。一方面他的作品以美国南方为背景表现对旧南方的怀旧主题;另一方面他的剧作又充斥诗性与野蛮、南方与北方、传统与现代、同性恋与异性恋、虚幻与现实交织的矛盾冲突的主题。针对威廉斯的两个戏剧代表作,以作家本人的宗教信仰与特殊成长经历为切入点可以探出其戏剧主题矛盾性产生的根源、内涵及其表现形式。Tennessee Williams is an American old south dramatist who was born in the later half century after the American Civil War, and he is also a well-known homosexual in American drama history. Due to his special growing background and complicated life experiences, Tennessee Williams＇ dramatic themes abound with contradictoriness which is demonstrated by the conflicts of poetics vs savageness, south vs north, tradition vs modernity, homosexuality vs heterosexuality, illusion vs re- ality, etc. His two major representative dramas, his religious belief and his special growth experiences make out his thematic contradictoriness as well as its roots, its connotations and its forms of expression.
