Objective To explore the effect of automatic tube current modulation(ATCM) technique on the quality of thyroid CT images and the thyroid radiation dose. Methods Forty patients with thyroid diseases were randomly divided into two groups, with 20 cases in each group. Group A underwent routine CT scan while Group B underwent scan with ATCM technique. The objective quality of images(including noise value and signal-to-noise ratio),subjective quality score of images and CT dose index were compared between the two groups. Results No significant differences were found between the two groups in noise values of cleidomastoid, thyroid nodules and thyroid parenchyma,or the signal-to-noise ratio of cleidomastoid(all P〉0. 05). Fifty cases and 5 cases in Group A achieved 4 scores and 3 scores of subjective quality of images compared to 12 cases and 8 cases in Group B,respectively. There was no significant difference in the quality score of image between the two groups(P〉0. 05). The CT dose index of Group A was higher than that of Group B(28. 29 ± 0. 44 m Gy vs.24. 61 ± 0. 91 m Gy; P〈0. 05). Conclusion ATCM technique can obtain good quality of images and significantly reduce the thyroid radiation dose in the scanning for patients with thyroid diseases.
