The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of combined exposure Pb and Cd on trace element content in liver and kidney of laying hens. Lead acetate (100 rag/L)and/or cadmium chloride (50 rag/L)were administered as drinking water to 120 40-week-age Hyline hens for eight weeks. The results showed that, synergistic effect were observed on Cu, Fe, Zu, Se in liver; while there was not obvious effect on Mn after combined exposure Pb and Cd. The same effect was observed on Mn in kidney, but antagonism effects were observed on Cu, Fe, Zn, Se in kidney after combined exposure Pb and Cd. In conclusion, there was complex interaction between heavy metals (cadmium and lead) and trace elements in poultry. Metabolism disorder of trace elements was one of the important mechanisms of toxicity of lead and cadmium.
