Objective To investigate the prevalence rate of dental caries in Air Force pilots in order to propose suggestions for pilots' oral health care. Methods Three hundred and ninety-four male military pilots aged from 23-55 years old (average age of 30.42± 6.41 years) were randomly selected by cluster sampling. All subjects were respectively grouped by age and types of aircrafts:〈35 years old group (314 pilots) and ≥35 years old group (80 pilots),fighter/attacker group (218pilots) and other aircraft group (176 pilots).Dentists examined pilots' dental caries status by inquiry, visual examination and probing according to quadrant order. Results The prevalence rate of dental caries was 73.35% in 394 pilots. The mean of decayed-missing-filled-tooth (DMFT) Ⅰ was 2.42.The prevalence rate of decayed caries was 51.52%.The mean decayed-filled-tooth (DFT) was 1.42.The prevalence rate of decayed teeth, missing teeth 1 and filled teeth was respectively 39.85%,42.39% and 25.13%.The morbidity rate of missing-tooth Ⅰ,Ⅱ and decayed missing-filled-tooth Ⅰof ≥35 years old group was respectively greater than that of 〈35 years old group (x.2 =23.41,8.11,4.30,P〈0.05).Decayed rate of fighter/attacker group was greater than that of other aircraft group (x2 =8.56,P〈0.05),but the prevalence rate of missing-tooth Ⅰ of fighter/attacker group was lower than that of other aircraft group (x2 =23.03,P〈0.05).Conclusions The oral health status of Air Force pilots was not satisfactory.More emphasis on improving oral health care is suggested.
