This study aimed to investigate the effects of glutamine supplementation on nitric oxide (NO) and homocysteine in blood during recovery after aerobic swimming in untrained female students. Sixty healthy female university students were selected as the research object, who were randomly divided into two groups. One group received placebo or and the other received L-glutamine, with the supplement doses at 0.1 g/kg-wt. Then the students performed a single bout of aerobic swimming at an estimated speed corresponding to the 55%-75% HR_max for 2 hours. Blood samples from each student were collected before exercise, and at 0 h, 1 h and 2 h after exercise to detect the concentrations of NO (NOx, NO2-, NO3-), homocysteine, glucose, insulin, HDL-C (high-density lipoprotein cholesterol), LDL-C (low-density lipoprotein cholesterol), triglycerol, and total cholesterol in blood. The results showed that there were no differences in the levels of NOx, insulin, HDL-C, LDL-C, triglycerol, and total cholesterol between the groups after swimming. However, the concentrations of homocysteine and glucose were increased in the glutamine group after swimming. In conclusion, this study suggested that glutamine could increase the level of homocysteine and blood glucose in the blood at the recovery stage after exercise, but there was not enough evidence to demonstrate that glutamine supplementation could increase levels of nitric oxide in endurance exercise recovery.
