The History Textbook Event taking place in Japan in 1982 had instigated China's 'rediscovery'of the Nanjing Massacre, which led to the establishment of the Memorial for Victims in Nanjing Massacre as a site of memory. Seven numerical signs have gradually been introduced into the Memorial and weaved into a unique network of signs. From the theoretical perspective of 'place as assemblage,'this article explores how these signs and the micro assemblages in which the former are embedded have been produced in particular forms of materiality, how they exercise their functions of spatial definition and differentiation respectively, how they have produced multiple discourses by means of metaphorical mechanisms, and how they have been triggering or accommodating a variety of practices of memory with certain scripting effects. These memory works that revolve around numerical signs constitute an important part of the place identity of the Memorial.
