摘　　要：《广州纪录报》作为广州第一份近代化报刊,不仅是近代中国第一份英文报刊,也是鸦片战争前后中国最重要的商业报刊。论文以《广州纪录报》缩微胶卷为新史料,介绍其创刊过程、编辑方针、主要内容、编排特色等概况;论述其在践行和传播新闻出版自由理念、出版增刊号外、注重革新版面和多样经营等方面的开创性贡献。《广州纪录报》不仅在中国新闻传播发展史具有奠基地位,成为近代中国英文报业的开端;而且在世界新闻传播发展史上具有重要的开拓意义。其积极发挥联通中外的社会作用,紧密地将中国纳入了世界信息交流的新闻网络,成为世界近代化报刊走向中国并在中华大地落地生根的关键环节之一。The Canton Register is the first modern newspaper published in Guangzhou. It is also China's first Englishlanguage newspaper. Moreover, it's also one of the most important commercial newspapers around the Opium War. This study researched The Canton Register' s process of publication, editorial policy changes, its main content, and its features of layout. It discusses the pioneering contribution of practicing and spreading the freedom of the press, publishing supplement and extra of newspaper, improving layout and diversified business. The Canton Register was not only the foundation of the history of the development of Chinese journalism and communication while being the beginning of modern Chinese newspaper industry. It was also of great pioneering significance in the history of journalism and communication in the world.
