The holistic investigation of metabolomics is in agreement with the whole concept thinking of traditional Chinese medicine ( TCM ). Metabonomic technology has been widely applied to the study of the bioactivities and biochemical action mechanisms of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment of cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, liver and kidney damage and anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects. This paper mainly summarizes the application of the serum metabolomics in the treatment of cardio-cerebrovascular disease and liver and kidney injury as well as anti-inflammatory and anti-viral effects of traditional Chinese medicine. The results show that amino acid, fatty acids, phospholipids and carbohydrates are the main biomarkers of above- mentioned diseases. Additionally, these studies successfully demonstrated that amino acid metabolism, fatty acid metabolism, phospholipid metabolism, Principal component analysis ( TCA ) cycle and energy metabolism are the major metabolic pathways of above-mentioned diseases, and traditional Chinese medicine improved these abnormal endogens metabolites and metabolic pathways of above-mentioned diseases to the normal state. Overall, metabolomic research is helpful to find biomarker and elucidate the potential mechanism of traditional Chinese medicine in the treatment with these diseases.
