As a fat-soluble compound found in the 1920s, vitamin D is essential for bone health because of its classical role in regulation calcium and phosphorus homeostasis. In recent years, since vitamin D receptor was found in the skeletal muscle cells, the impact of vitamin D on skeletal muscle is becoming the new research focus. Researches suggest that vitamin D plays a role in maintaining skeletal muscle health through genetic and non-genetic mechanisms. It has been shown in observational studies that circulating vitamin D level is associated with skeletal muscle health, both in general population and athletes. However, the optimal serum 25 (OH) D concentration for main- taining skeletal muscle health has not been determined. Results from random control trials are no consensus on the effects of vitamin D supplementation on skeletal muscle form and function. And, it' s found that there may be different adaptive response on vitamin D supplementation between upper and lower limb muscle groups, which is probably attributed to the diversity of vitamin D receptor concentration and gene polymorphism. Several researches have also found that vitamin D perhaps have ergogenic potential through the enhancement of endogenous testosterone production, and the mechanism need to be further studied.
