[ Purpose/significance ] This paper investigates and discusses the present situation of special collections of domestic and foreign university libraries, in order to lay the foundationfor exploring more appropriate resource organization model of special collections. [ Method/process] According to the QS world university rankings, 56 domestic and foreign university libraries are selected. We survey the name of the special collections, the scope, the types and the categories of descriptions metadata online which are listed on the website and then retrieve and use them, so as to explore the present situation of the organization of the special collections in libraries. [ Result/conclusion ] The investigation discover that the organizations of library special collections resources are extremely non-standard. Whether the special resource classification, or self-built metadata, as well as the connection and openness of special collections resources, could not meet therealisticdemand of the special collections resource service. Linked data technology is proposed to aggregate and organize the library special collections according to the theme in the future.
