摘 要:西奥多·德莱塞是20世纪美国现代小说的先驱者之一。一百多年来,学界普遍给德莱塞贴上了自然主义思想的标签,然而,德莱塞在其作品中所表现出来的思想是非常复杂的——从早期的机械决定论演变到晚年的"超人"哲学。通过比较德莱塞的早期作品《嘉莉妹妹》和他成熟时期作品"欲望三部曲"的异同点来探讨自然主义只是德莱塞在特定历史时期的产物,而他真正崇尚的是实用主义。Theodore Dreiser, one of the pioneers of contemporary American novels in 20th century, contributed a lot to the development of American naturalistic novels. Over the past one hundred years, critics have been treating Dreiser as a naturalism novelist. However, Dreiser's ideas in his novels are very complicated: varying from determinism to "superman" philosophy. By comparing his two typical works-Sister Carrie and "Trilogy of Desire" created in his early years and adult years, this paper tries to prove that naturalism was only what he used to defend himself, while what he really stuck to was pragmatism.
