From mid-19 th century to the first half of the 20 thcentury, there emerged quite a number of racial passing novels by African American writers in American literature. These novels which are set in the real social phenomenon of racial passing in America, center on the fair-skinned mulattos' "racial passing"and unfold their narratives. Although taking"racial passing"as the theme and key plot, the novels indeed question and deconstruct the"racial passing". These works unmask by distinctive prank narratives that the mulattos' "racial passing"is in essence a false proposition. Like tricksters in African mythology, the mulattos who conduct racial passing intend to complete the composition of self by the bodily passing, and revel in their defiance the politics of color by the ritual of spatial move. In the prank narratives, the novels perform and parody the whiteness, subvert the ideology of the color line and race differences, deconstruct the validity of race prejudice, appeal for racial integration in their reflection of race and identity in epistemology.
