The ecological adaptability of three one-year old seedlings of Robinia pseudoacacia clones was studied by comparing their diurnal photosynthetic changes and biomass allocation in sunny days . The diurnal change of net photosynthetic rate (Pn) for L1 and L59 showed a double-peak curve with the peak values occurring separately at 10: 00 and 16:00, whereas for L78 it was a unimodal curve and the peak value was at 10:00. Diurnal average values of the Pn was as follows: L1 〈 L59 〈 L/8. 'o significant differences were found between L1 (or L78 ) and L5 9 in mean daily value of transpiration rate (E), but both L1 and L78 was lower than L59 in mean daily value of leaf temperature (Tl). However, there were no significant differences in mean daily value of stomatal conductance (gs) and water use efficiency (WUE) among the three clones. In biomass allocation, there were no significant differences in leaf mass ratio and stem mass ratio among the three clones. However, in root mass ratio, L1 and L59 were higher than L7 8 . By integrating the three clones’ ecophysiological characteristics, the results indicated that L5 9 had the strongest adaptability in the early successional stage because of its high photosynthetic capacity and root mass allocation.
