Objective To systematically review the short-term and long-term health consequences of catch-up growth in low birth weight infants (LBWI).Methods The databases of MEDLINE,EMBASE,Wanfang data and CNKI were searched for studies on the health impact of catch-up growth in LBWI.The quality of studies was assessed using the risk of bias assessment tool, and the power of evidence was assessed using the GRADE tool. Results Seven studies met the inclusion criteria for health outcomes of catch-up growth.Positive associations between weight catch-up growth and body mass and/or glucose metabolism were revealed in 3 out of 5 studies on short-term health outcomes, while the reduced risk of hospitalisation was suggested in one study. The association between catch-up growth and higher BMI or cholesterol was found in 3 studies on longer-term health outcomes.GRADE assessment suggested that the quantity and quality of evidence were low. Conclusion Catch-up growth following LBWI has short-term health benefits, but may have adverse long-term health impacts, but the evidence is relatively weak.
