This papergives a brief introduction tothe characteristics of 49 Japanese journalists in Chinadur- ing the Meijiand Taisho age, tries to explore their unique spiritual world and role in modern Chinese history as a professional group. The author supposes that their characteristics are reflected in four aspects = these early Jap- anese newspapermen are born in a class of samurai whose "noble spirit"maintained them a distance from bureau- cratic system buthad enthusiam inpolitics; They once were independent--minded, but became an instrument of Japan' sdiplomatic policies consciously or unconsciously; They tried to make their newspapersself-supporting and struggled for the freedom of speech, but cannot get rid of the controlfromJapanese government. Theirjournalism ideality and familiarity of Chinese culture were gradually fading awayin successive generation who was born in Japanese bureaucratic system.
