摘　　要：文章梳理美国哈佛燕京图书馆首任馆长裘开明创制、发展和推广中文图书卡片目录的历史,包括哈佛燕京学社汉和图书馆中文图书编目法与中文卡片目录的创制及其与燕京大学图书馆联合印制中文卡片目录计划,洛克菲勒基金会哈佛燕京学社汉和图书馆书本式目录和卡片目录印刷计划,美国图书馆协会和研究图书馆协会中国合作采购与合作编印卡片目录计划,以及美国国会图书馆卡片目录再版计划。文章高度评价裘开明在推动美国东亚图书馆中文图书编目与卡片目录发展中的杰出贡献。Alfred K＇aiming Ch＇iu,the famous expert in American East Asian Libraries,is the first Librarian of Chinese and Japanese Library of Harvard Yenching Institute（HYI） for thirty-eight years since he founded the library in 1928.This paper systematically summarizes the history and the development stages of the catalogue cards project for Chinese books,which was sponsored by Alfred K＇aiming Ch＇iu,including the creation of cataloging system of Chinese books and Chinese catalogue cards of Chinese and Japanese Library of HYI,the co-printing project of Chinese card catalogue of the Chinese-Japanese Library of HYI and Yenching University Library,the proposal and implementation of the Rockefeller foundation Classified Book Catalogue of Chinese Books and printed card project for the Chinese-Japanese Library of HYI,the cooperative purchasing program of war-time Chinese publications from Chungking sponsored by American Library Association（ALA） and Association of Research libraries（ARL）,and the Card Reproduction Project and Cooperative Cataloging Project sponsored by the Library of Congress.This paper objectively evaluates and affirms the historical contribution of Alfred K＇aiming Ch＇iu.
