摘  要:The Qing dynasty's encounter with Western empires is best understood as representing neither a clash of civilizations, nor China's failure to adapt to supposedly more sophisticated modes of commerce and governance. Instead, historians ought to turn their attention to the mutually constitutive processes of diplomatic and legal exchange that dominated the period leading up to the first opium conflict.
