摘 要:在十九世纪末二十世纪初的爱尔兰文艺复兴运动中,以现实主义为主流风格的约翰·辛格贡献突出。他一生短暂,却在爱尔兰舞台及其文学史上画下了浓墨重彩的一笔。1903年创作的《骑马下海的人》是一部独幕抒情悲剧。作品看似剧情简单,冲突较小,但蕴含着深刻的存在主义思想。本文通过对该剧所折射世界的荒诞感、人生的虚无感、自由选择以及个体孤独的探讨,来印证该剧的创作在内源上与存在主义核心内涵的一致性,以期为该剧提供一个全新而深刻的探究视阈。John Synge, whose writing style is characterized by realism, contributed dramatically to literature during the Irish Renaissance from the end of 19th century to the beginning of 20th century. Much as he lived a short life, John Synge did leave an impressive effect on the Irish stage as well as its literature. Riders to the Sea created in 1903 was a one-act lyric tragedy, which contained core concepts of existentialism though the writing style seemed simple and peaceful. This essay aims to confirm the conceptual consistency between the thematic concerns of Riders to the Sea and existentialism, thus providing a brand-new perspective of understanding this tragedy by analyzing such existentialist elements as sense of absurdity, nihility, free choice and individual alienation reflected in the play.
