A laboratory study was conducted to investigate the aggregation, spectral properties and complexing ability of dissolved organic matter(DOM) in secondary effluent of municipal sewage with Cu^(2+) by using three-dimensional fluorescence spectroscopy,UV spectrophotometry and dynamic light scattering technique.Using the modified Stern-Volmer equation the conditional stability constant(lg K) and the proportion of fluorescent functional groups of the DOM binding with Cu^(2+) were calculated to be 1.74—2.59 and 8.77%—39.44% respectively. The UV253/UV203 values increased with the increases of the Cu^(2+) concentrations and pH in a certain range. The fluorescence intensity was substantially strengthened and the fluorescence index(FI) reduced with increasing pH at pH 7—9.However,the fluorescence intensity decreased and the FI increased with increasing the Cu^(2+) concentration at the same pH.It could be concluded that the secondary effluent DOM complexed withCu^(2+) changing their state and migration in water.DOM had higher complexing stability and binding ability with Cu^(2+) at pH 7.
