Through the vicissitudes of Taiping Bay Wharf, you can find how Yantai developed as a port city. Located in the north end of Shengli Road, Zhifu District, Yantai, Taiping Bay Wharf is a port surrounded by barriers with the long Haian Street to the south, Yantai Mountain to the east, a wharf in the west and a long sea wall in the north. Under the additional protection of the external natural defenses of Zhifu Island, Kongtong Island and Biandan Island, it enjoys smooth, wide and deep water, constituting a good bay. Its name, Taiping Bay, was derived from the meaning of auspice. After Taiping Bay Wharf was established, the loading and unloading center of the ports in Yantai was transplanted from Thean Hou Temple to the Customs Wharf. Thanks to the relatively deep water level at the north bank of the wharf, ships were able to directly stop along the bank for loading and uploading, making it convenient for passengers to land. From then on, fundamental changes took place in Taiping Bay, an ancient port, witnessing swarming ships including large ships in and out. Yantai, a garrison fishing village in the Ming Dynasty, rose as an important trading port in north China.
