The relationship between China and the rest of the world has a long and complex history, foregrounding all discussions on the influence of Chinese architecture in the world. This paper argues, in this context, that the influence of Chinese architecture in the world must be rooted in sustainable development of global civilizational infrastructure nstead of Chinese nationa way of preserving world sm, in an open and better cultures rather than the resistance-acceptance pattern that characterizes recent Chinese history. We all rely on European and American achievements today in architecture and urbanism, but we also all face the humanistic and environmental crises; these are world crises. In anticipating the influence of Chinese architecture in the world, it will be instructive to understand the potentials of Chinesethoughts: the thing-based concept of wanwu (ten thousand things), the intellectual acceptance and practice of human labor, the preference of the market place of things to abstract capitalism, and the deep connection between constructed environment and writing. These present us with tremendous potentials to reimagine architecture, and to reformulate a better understanding of the world, in strong contrast with the acceptance-colonization model of Europe and America. This will be a cultural project of the twenty- first century with great significance.
