Since Baudelaire's "searching for modernity", modernity has remained a key word in the interpretation of the concept of "modern". Modernity has also been an important subject of modernist literature. With the Third World countries getting increasingly involved in the process of modernization, modernism is releasing its greater power rather than waning to an end. By resorting to Spengler's concept of "the mind of city" and other researches on modernity, this paper explores London and the London people represented in Virginia Woolf's Mrs Dalloway, disclosing that the significance of this masterpiece is that it is an exploration of the paradox of modernity: the contrast between the prosperous metropolis and the secluded urbanite.
