The dispute on the issue of translation of the biblical term "God" into Chinese, which took place during 1807—1877, was called the "Early Stage of the Terminology Dispute". Two quite distinctive camps were formed, one of which were British missionaries, the other American missionaries. The former preferred the term "上帝"(Shang-te), while the latter "神"(Shin). The two sides' uncompromising positions against each other led to the breakup of the Translation Committee in Shanghai. This theoretical issue was handled more emotionally because their aims were not for the solution of the issue, but vying for their status. Mission archives show that the "Terminology Dispute" is a kind of competition between British and American missionaries. Each missionary stuck to his own camp. The boards and secretaries of the missionary societies in their homelands also exerted their impact on the issue with their "invisible hands".
