OBJECTIVE To explore the effect of parasympathetic inhibition on the expression of Thl/Th2 cytokines and neuropeptides in nasal mucosa of allergic rhinitis. METHODS Twenty-four mice were randomly divided into three groups: control, AR model, AR model with ipratropium bromide treatment. AR model was established by using ovalbumin sensitization. Ovalbumin serum sIgE was measured by ELISA. The expression of interleukin-4(IL-4), interferon-gamma(IFN-γ), substance P(SP), and vasoactive interstinal peptides(VIP) in nasal mucosa was detected by immunohistochemistry, western blots, and imaging analysis. RESULTS Data from immunohistochemistry and western blot showed that the expression level of IL-4, SP, VIP was significantly higher in AR model than that in control(P〈0.05), and significantly decreased in AR model with ipratropium bromide treatment(P〈0.05). CONCLUSION Inhibition of cholinergic nerves can not only relieve the symptoms of allergic rhinitis, but also can modulate the Th2-predominant immune reaction in AR and the expression of neuropeptides.
